Nestled among the hills and valleys of western Kentucky’s coal field region lies Muhlenberg County. Formed in 1798 from the neighboring counties of Logan and Christian, Muhlenberg County was named after General John Peter Gabriel Muhlenberg, a clergyman, a soldier, and a politician of the Colonial, Revolutionary, and Post-Revolutionary eras.
The county seat is Greenville, where one of the most beautiful courthouses in the state is located. Built in 1907, the courthouse was and still is the focal point of downtown Greenville. Muhlenberg county is the 14th largest county in the Commonwealth of Kentucky with a total area of 479 square miles. The population is over 31,000 people, making it the 34th largest county in the Commonwealth of Kentucky based on population.
There are abundant tourism and recreational attractions in Muhlenberg County. The two primary geographic features being the Green River and Lake Malone. The 300-mile-long Green River is a tributary of the Ohio River. It provides a commercial outlet for goods (primarily coal) to be shipped from the county to the major trade centers along the Mississippi River. Lake Malone, spanning 788 acres in southern Muhlenberg County, provides water recreation such as swimming, boating, and fishing. The lake and the surrounding hardwood forest form Lake Malone State Park.
Nearby Dogwood Lake and Camping Resort has a beach with a 280 foot full loop waterslide, campsites, and an adjacent 18-hole golf course. Golf enthusiasts can also tee up at three other courses – Central City Country Club, Greenville Country Club, and Twin Oak Golf in Greenville. The Muhlenberg County Rails to Trails system is a six-mile walking, biking, and fitness trail between Greenville and Central City. The Paradise Park in Powderly is a replica of a 1920’s coal-mining town and features the birthplace home of the late Merle Travis.
